The Chicks

Blondie, a Buff Orpington with beautiful strawberry-blonde-peachy- gold feathers. She was high-ranking in the flock.

Killed by a hawk December 12, 2012      Rest in Peace, Blondie.

Curious looking intently at Steve dangling a worm over the fence.
She is a Plymouth Barred Rock and the dominate eater making sure no one else is one-upping her for the best morsel.
My flock leader and she lets the others know.

Rest In Peace and Rule in Heaven

October 24, 2017  Eternal sleep at the vets after a nasty, maggot infestation on her butt.

Dolly is a Golden Lace Wyandotte, very much a Queen in the Flock even if she may not be the Top Chick. Regal and quiet.

 June 24, 2012:
Steve had to put down after suffering from an unknown illness.

Fearless is also a G.L.W., lowest member in the flock and she doesn't care.
She is my favorite.  I named her Fearless because as a baby chick she was one of the smallest, but was fearless enough to muscle her way into the group for the hand-fed worms. I nursed her back from a mysterious illness in November 2011.
Fearless did a coup on Gabby 2 years ago during molt and moved into spot #2, behind Curious. She has now taken over flock leader with the death of Curious.

This is Gabby, a Cuckoo Marans, my best layer! And, Miss Chatterbox, always clucking, cooing, mewing or sayin' something! She seems unbothered by any of the pecking order games but remains at #2 behind Fearless our new leader.

Amelia is a Sicilian Buttercup, 1 year younger than the others and 4 months old at adoption. Lowest member of the flock, but she is undaunted about sneaking in for a morsel of food. I call her "Baby" but named her formally Amelia, for Amelia Earhart, as she is a flyer! And, in November [2012] I clipped her right wing feathers to stall her from flying out of the playground and following me around. She does still fly up and land on my back if I am bent over or sitting.

June 12, 2015:  Just found dead at 8:15 pm.  Raise hell in chicken Heaven!

Evie, our new member adopted January 2013, is named for Extra Virgin Olive Oil.  She is a beautiful Buff Lace Wandotte, same base breed as Fearless. She has moved up from the lowest member by keeping Amelia on the bottom. Another chatty chicken, too! She is about the same age as the original 3: gorgeous light caramel and pearly-grey white feathers. Still shy around me, but getting more friendly.

July 20, 2014: just found dead.        Rest in Peace, Evie.

New Flock Born March 25, 2015:  Adopted March 28, 2015

Plant names at this part of the alphabet:  H - - I - -J - - K - -L

Hosta is an Ameracauna. A breed of chickens with diversity of coloring, she is gorgeous browns, copper and black. Notice her feathered 'cheeks'. Hosta will have a rose comb, which looks liked crinkled up tissue.   We haven't gotten to be friends yet, but she is vocal and curious and right in the middle of the New Flock.

Ivy is one of the 2 new Sicilian Buttercups, adopted to be breed-mates with Amelia, sadly dying before getting to know them. I can only tell her apart from Kiwi, her sister by the right side double prong of her comb. Ivy and Kiwi love to fly up onto my arm if I hold it out, onto my back if I bend over or on the perch where I sit to watch my birds.  She is very friendly and I think #3 in ranking the New Flock.
You can compare the 2 different combs. Kiwi's below is smaller and straighter.
Kiwi is the 2nd Buttercup. A leader and vying with Jasmine to be Top Chick. She is like Ivy in terms of wanting to be 'on me'. Amelia was the same way, so I wonder if it is a breed behavior. Kiwi had to be taught to roost in the coop. I would go out at night after they had adapted to the coop and pen and find her roosting in the rafters of the roof. How she got up there, I haven't a clue. I do know she is a good flyer! I managed to get her down and put her inside....she's smart, she got it and now picks a high inside perch at bedtime.

Jasmine is a Gold Sex Link, a early maturing breed crossed between a Rhode Island Red male and a White Rock female. She laid first, at 20 weeks.
She is curious, pushy and chatty. Jasmine and Kiwi are both trying to be First among the New Flock. She seems to be less afraid of the Older girls, and dances away from the peck-punishment.

February 16, 2018 passed away in my triage cage due to possible bacterial infection and resulting condition called salpingitis.
I will miss all your giant, rose-red eggs!!

Lilly is my Welsummer. The image on Kellogg's Corn Flakes is a Welsummer rooster. She is shy and was much slower to develop than the others. Her comb is coming in slower. She does like to talk, but seems to prefer the perimeter rather than the center of the flock. She was the first to figure out how to roost inside the coop; I'm not underestimating her intelligence and I think she'll turn out to be a nice girl. Her feathers are beautiful dark browns, gold and rusty colors which match with Hosta.
